I am not one of those early risers who naturally wakes up when the sun hits their face in the morning and pops out of bed ready to greet the day. In fact, I struggle to get out of bed in the morning. Hard. I think my record for most “snoozes” exceeds two hours which might be borderline a problem. Obviously, these excessive snoozing days occur on the weekends but it’s not an excuse. I now blame our rescue pup who sleeps in our bed every night and is the biggest cuddle addict. Evidence below:
The morning is the time to set your intentions for the day and welcome the sunlight as a fresh start. With that knowledge, I am in the process of trying to get up earlier and have some “me” time before my day officially gets started and I’m out the door. I also recently read The Miracle Morning which really opened my eyes to setting the tone for the day. It’s a great read!
These rituals are ways for me to focus on things I enjoy and get the most out of the limited free time I have in a day. Below are some of my favorite things to do in the morning to get started on the right foot. (Once this foot is out of bed!)
Stretch- The benefits of stretching go on and on but I mainly like to do this to get the blood flowing. It increases the blood flow to the entire body including the brain. Who doesn’t need that in the morning? It also improves posture and flexibility. And it simply feels good first thing in the morning! If I have time to do a quick 10 minute yoga video, I know I’ll be happier throughout the day.
Meditate- Morning Meditation is something I am not used to and it’s something I am actually still figuring out. It is boasted by so many as having amazing benefits that last your whole day. It focuses your mind, provides mental clarity and helps you get in tune with who you are as a person. I’ve been starting with two minute increments and trying to think of nothing but my breathing in and out. Focus on your breath and appreciate it.
Coffee- Everyone deserved a reward after some morning meditation. I love everything about coffee. The smell, the process of making it, the taste and the caffeine. I have been adding cinnamon essential oil to my coffee since it’s Fall now and it seems seasonal- it makes it 10 times better! (I don’t recommend ingesting just any old essential oil. I purchase and am a wellness advocate for doTERRA so that’s my strong recommendation).
Write- I love keeping a handwritten journal. There’s something about being able to look back at your thoughts from years ago and see what your inner dialogue was at the time. Seriously, some of the stuff is comical! My current favorite thing is my “Favorite Moment of the Day” journal. I keep it next to my bed and I write a simple sentence or a few sentences of a moment from the previous day that I am most thankful for. This keeps me focusing on the positive things in life! I would highly recommend keeping one.
Essential Oils for the day- Based on my mood, I pick out some essential oils to keep on me throughout the day. If I’m tired, I rub some peppermint in my hands and inhale for a quick energizing breathe. If I’m feeling groggy, I take some Bergamot or Wild Orange to brighten that mood. If I know I have a long day at work ahead of me, I lather on the InTune blend. It’s my natural fix for my ADD 🙂
